Free Family Tree Template — 3, 4 & 5 Generations (Printable & Online 2026)
Types of Family Tree Templates
Before choosing a template, it helps to understand the two main formats used in genealogy:
Pedigree chart (ancestor chart)
This is the classic "branching" family tree. You start with one person on the left (usually yourself) and branch outward to the right, adding parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. Each generation doubles: 1 person → 2 parents → 4 grandparents → 8 great-grandparents. It's the most popular format and works well for 3 to 5 generations on a single page.
Descendant chart
This starts with an ancestor at the top and shows all their descendants below — children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. It's useful when you want to document all branches of a family from a common ancestor downward.
Interactive digital tree
Unlike paper templates, an interactive digital tree has no size limit, can hold photos for every person, is editable at any time, and can be shared as a file. This is what FamilyTreeFreeMaker.com provides — and it's free.
If you want something to fill in by hand or print for a school project, use a printable template. If you want a permanent, editable record with photos, use the interactive online tool.

Tips for Filling in Your Family Tree Template
- Start from the bottom up. Begin with yourself and work back through the generations — it's easier to fill gaps as you go.
- Use maiden names for women. Always record women's birth surnames, not their married names, to make future research easier.
- Mark uncertain information. Use "c." (circa) for approximate dates, e.g. "c. 1910", rather than leaving fields blank.
- Add photos even if blurry. Any photo is better than none — scan old prints before they deteriorate further.
- Save versions as you go. Each time you add a generation, save a new copy of the file so you have a backup trail.
